Vineyard

Guy and Sheila Woodall planted ten acres of grape vines at Thorncroft Vineyard in Surrey in 1986 – the closest vineyard to London. To make ends meet in the early years they started a sideline making Guy’s granny’s recipe for Elderflower Cordial. Pretty soon this became the main business and the vineyard the sideline. Sadly nowadays only one acre of Pinot Noir remains from the original plantation.

Pinot Noir is a versatile grape, and can be used for red wine, in a year with plenty of sunshine, or rose, dry white, or sparkling wine in lesser years. We currently have a sweet botrytised dessert wine for sale and a delicious burgundy-style red from the 2002 Pinot. Contact us for details.

We also grow 20 acres of organic elderflowers, mostly two special super-aromatic varieties we developed ourselves, though most of our elderflowers are still gathered from the wild by our gypsy pickers. Nettles for the nettle cordial also come from our small farm at Leatherhead.
